What Is Medicare? A Quick Guide

Medicare is a federal health insurance program designed primarily for people age 65 and older. It also covers certain younger individuals with disabilities or qualifying health conditions.

How Medicare Works

Medicare is made up of different parts, each covering specific services:

  • Part A helps cover inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and some home health services.

  • Part B covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and certain medical supplies.

  • Part C (Medicare Advantage) is offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. These plans combine Part A and Part B coverage and often include prescription drug coverage and additional benefits like dental, vision, or hearing services.

  • Part D helps cover the cost of prescription medications.

When Can You Enroll?

Most people can first sign up for Medicare during their Initial Enrollment Period, which begins three months before the month they turn 65 and ends three months after.

Each year, Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 – December 7) allows individuals to review their coverage and make changes for the upcoming year.

Choosing the Right Coverage

Some people choose Original Medicare (Parts A and B), while others prefer a Medicare Advantage plan that may bundle additional benefits and prescription drug coverage.

The best choice depends on your healthcare needs, budget, preferred doctors, and medications.

Why Medicare Matters

Medicare helps make healthcare more affordable and accessible for millions of Americans. Taking time to understand your options can help you make informed decisions and feel confident about your coverage.
